Thank you for sharing your well crafted memories! Richly drawn with an inevitable foreshadowing.

I also had a beautiful widowed mother, and also a firstborn. Our summers were in the mountains by a river where she manned the nurses tent at a girl scout camp, working to give us a vacation. I remember seeing and not understanding sad shadows between the drags of her cigarette.

Thank you for that insight. My MIL was a nurse who worked at a summer camp in the Northeast. Not a widow but the stories my husband tells of those camps feel polar opposite. I can see your mother in that setting. What women share. x
