Hi Laurie, you wrote this in a way that is so candid and pure that it hurts me for the little girl you once were, along with your sisters. I know these things were forced upon you, and you had to fend for yourselves. I feel through your writing how much you were missing — in terms of food and care that you should've gotten from an adult figure. It is lovely writing. It speaks truth and puts me right there with the little you. 💕🙏
Thank you, Yuni! I'm glad I wrote it so that it put you with us--not that it was such a great place to be, but I guess that's one of the things I'm aiming for. People should know what children feel, and that they do feel. Not too long ago in the US, what happened in one's home was looked on as nobody else's business. That's how it was when I grew up anyway, it started to change maybe in the 70's? Anyway, thank you so much for reading and your thoughtful comment, I really appreciate it.
Hi, Laurie, that was the case in Korea too, sadly until the 90s. Whatever happens within the walls, stayed there. It was some kind of sacred area for the head of household, and even the government would not dare to intervene.
When you talked about the juicy chicken that you found in the park, it clicked right away. One of my episodes has a chicken story similar to yours, though it was delivered to our home. Yes, I am glad I came across your writing, as it rang a lot of bells for me. 😌🙏
Thank you for reading! These are just memories now, not the best, but they don't hurt me anymore, at least not consciously. Parts of them can actually make me laugh!

Thank you for sharing these difficult times with us. It's heartbreaking that you and your sisters had to endure such a hard childhood.
