I was born and raised in the Adirondacks. My extended family still goes camping on Meacham Lake every summer. My wife and I made it back with the kids last summer for the first time in 10 years. My kids were 6 and 2 the last time we were there, that they were 16 and 12 last summer and old enough to enjoy it meant the world to me.

Harder to do now that I live in the Midwest now, but both my kids have said they want to go back. When we were there in 2015 it was for my parents 60th wedding anniversary and last year it was a belated 90th birthday party for my Mom.

I hiked New York, but not the Adirondacks, when I hiked the Appalachian Trail as a thru-hiker. Your images bring me back: The rain followed me from Georgia all the way to Maine, with a small reprieve in Pennsylvania, though buggy, high-heat, and drought conditions persisted, making me long for rain. I love your story; it captures what hiking is really all about: The joy of challenge (and an ice cream, fries, and burgers at the end)! You inspire me to want to find the trails Uncle Michael shared with you. He sounded awesome!

Wow, thru-hiking the AT is a huge accomplishment! I love reading big hiking stories but I think I’ll stick to day hikes myself.

Day hikes are just as amazing! Trust me :) Just because I had 180 of them in a row doesn't make any one of them less of an accomplishment. I absolutely love the image of you climbing up the rocks. That image captures so much for me. You nailed it, Caroline!

Hello Caroline:

I too spent summers in the Adirondacks on Osgood Pond in Paul Smiths. My happiest childhood memories are centered on experiences hiking and canoeing. My parents started with renting a cabin at Beech Hill Camp in 1956 and when the property was sold off, they bought a lot and built a house. We climbed St Regis every summer and I was married at the Wawbeek.

Thanks for sharing your memories. I credit the Adirondacks for shaping my appreciation of the natural world and environmental activism.
